PODCASTS:
"There Was An Attempt"
"Turning Hate On The Internet Into Humor"
THREE ARTIFACTS:
1) The Daily Show Story
2) Today Show Flashback: The Internet in 1995
3) Early 1990s Internet Commercial
REFLECTION:
While listening to these two podcasts, I experienced multiple different artifacts. To begin, within the first podcast, "There Was An Attempt" mentions a past story by The Daily Show in response to Matt's reddit post of the "Official Seal of Whitesboro New York". Moreover, the second podcast, "Turning Hate On The Internet Into Humor", plays listeners clips from the Today Show which provide a flashback to what discussion around the Internet and "World Wide Web" was like in 1995. In addition, this same podcasts cites an Internet commercial from the early 1990s where it is painted to be perceived as pure as it provides many positive examples of individuals raving about its benefits. I believe that Reddit provides a platform for Internet trolls to post harsh comments which can have negative impacts on society. Popular and controversial posts spread among us quickly and easily and create public disputes. We see this demonstrated by the Matt example in the first podcast. One reddit post was able to generate enough buzz to be given a story on a popular television program. Reddit and other websites create problems that were not even there to begin with and do more harm than good at the end of the day. Although there is potential for them to be beneficial, many people cannot control themselves and miss-use cites like Reddit. Therefore, I believe a solution to this would be a better screening process for posts to eliminate the potentially harmful ones.
